KUALA LUMPUR: Private contractors hired to carry out renovation works in residences must comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the government.
Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the requirements included undergoing Covid-19 health screenings before embarking on their jobs.
Ismail Sabri said a swab test was compulsory for those involved in the renovation works.
“For Malaysian contractors who want to do the same (renovating or installing items), they must speak to the management in charge of the said building.
“The management of an apartment, for example, may have concerns about the safety of its residents and therefore, they have the power to compel a contractor to do a swab test before commencing the work.
“The same goes for a (landed) house. As an example, if I hire a contractor to renovate my house and I am concerned about the safety of my family, I can tell the contractor to do a swab test.
“The contractor then must do a swab test for all of its employees before starting the renovation works,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
On SOP compliance at building sites, Ismail said as of yesterday the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) has inspected 7,424 sites.
Of this number, 1,625 were complying with the government’s SOP while 352 violated the rules and were given warnings.
“Fifteen construction sites have been instructed to close due to their non-compliance to the SOP and the remaining 5,432 sites are not operational,” he said.
