“Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an intelligent 3D model based process that equips architecture, engineering, and construction professionals with the insight and tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure.” – Autodesk
Traditionally, consultants for each discipline, i.e., architect, civil engineer, structural engineer, mechanical engineer and electrical engineer, landscape architect and specialists, conduct separate design with periodical updates or information sharing among consultants. Design coordinator will then incorporate designs from different consultants to carry out the construction.
With BIM technology, every consultant can now work on the same model simultaneously and receive live update for the changes done by other consultants. A comprehensive BIM model will contain architectural information, structural component and sizes, mechanical piping and electrical conduit in one single model which can then allow for clash analysis and preconstruction real building walk through to experience the design building in 3D environment.
BIM is no more an emerging technology to the industry. In fact, BIM e-submission has been made compulsory in our neighbouring country, Singapore for projects with more than 5000m2 of gross floor area. Its benefit in improving productivity and level of integration across various disciplines across the entire construction value chain has been recognised by the industry.
To ensure well-coordinated designs for our clients and to facilitate effective construction on site and hence, better construction quality, IPM is now heading towards adopting BIM softwares in our day to day design.
We departed. Never too late!
